Electroacoustic Club kicks off
a brand new night, 'We Make Great Pets,' taking place
every first Thursday of the month upstairs at The Cross
Kings and featuring some of the finest, most quirky,
yee-hah and ho-down, melodic, harmonius and multi-instrumental,
alt-country, twisted blues, indie-folk and new-grass!
The Samanas www.myspace.com/thesamanas
"Debut EP from this mysterious
Yorkshireman. Released through the fledgling Hard Graft
label on Christmas eve 2006, this sets the bar very
high for anything to follow. Strong lyrics, softly sung
on four gorgeous, slow-burning songs thankfully shed
a little light on an artist who would seemingly prefer
to remain anonymous. 'Not Comfortable' performing live
for the moment - it would be a real shame if this release
passed unnoticed due to a lack of (self?) promotion.
A sublime string arrangement on 'with this bullet' from
Paris Motel's Amy May completes a very special package
indeed. For fans of Elliott Smith, Cass McCombs and
Richard James' (from Gorky's) solo work."

"Imagine The Doors meet
The Beach Boys, mixed up with your favorite jam band,
Brit-pop-icize it (think Beta Band - try Airwolf below
if you don't believe me), and then plug them in with
some electronic exclamations snuck in between. It's
completely an album to kick back with and contemplate
the atomic weight of air." mainstreamisn'tsobad

Sabatta http://www.myspace.com/sabatta
Sabatta’s music mixes old and new – mashing
together classic 70's rock vibes with a modern edge;
scorching riffs with soaring vocals and excellent songwriting
- they call it STREET ROCK! Already drawing comparisons
to Hendrix and Lenny Kravitz, Sabatta’s diverse
influences also include QOTSA, RATM, Metallica and Guns
‘n’ Roses. Front man Yinka even draws on
his Nigerian roots within his guitar style adding a
twist to his frenetic lead playing!
London Fractures http://www.myspace.com/thelondonfractures
Unafraid to unleash their foot-stomping, head-nodding
anthems on someone else’s target demographic The
London Fractures are visibly relishing their own sound,
playing for their own teenage kicks and giving performances
loaded with the kind of wilful exuberance that served
to make household names out of The Wombats last year
and The Fratellis before them.
Fat Kampf http://www.myspace.com/fatkampf
The musical embodyment of calorific intake, combining
pop elements with a post punk sensibilty these quirky
songsters are jofully fun and have even been known to
provide free cake for their loyal fanbase.

Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring
are a somewhat contrary bunch. They are travellers and
troubadours, waifs and wanderers who have had the good
fortune of stumbling across each other one night at
a ramshackle gin palace in south east London. United
in apathy, they write wide-eyed indiepop songs that
are tinged with a sense of melancholic wonder at a world

Rockfeedback has a smile on its

that we only get as we announce another great line up
for a Club Rockfeedback evening.
EUGENE MCGUINNESS
After a stunning solo set at Club Rockfeedback’s
sister night The Basement Club, Eugene’s back
to show us what he can do with a full band at his disposable.
The inimitable, charming, Domino-signed singer songwriter
is currently putting together his second record –
have a sneaky peak.
WILLIAM Having
just released their debut LP on Tough Love Records,
William’s mashing up of the styles of Pavement,
Blur and Dinosaur Jr has Rockfeedback in a giddy panic
over how good it’ll be to chuck them on a stage
for us. The best new indie band in Britain, we reckon.
POST WAR YEARS My
my, how they’ve grown! First appearing at a Basement
Club evening for Rockfeedback many months ago, then
as a promising bunch of young upstarts, Post War Years
have become the finished article quicker than you can
say ‘Chess Club Records’ (who released their
ace debut single). Witness the well oiled but none the
less vital, vitriolic rock and roll machine they’ve
become, and smile inanely.

MJ Hibbett has supported Echo
& The Bunnymen on the ukelele, had an album of the
year in Rolling Stone, written a book that got his editor
fired, stayed out drinking longer than Nick Cave and
Shane McGowan, run naked through Glasgow hotels and
had an International Hit Record about computers that
made him famous in IT Departments all over the world.
He’s going to be telling
the story behind these adventures and more in his new
one-man show My Exciting Life In ROCK at this year’s
Edinburgh Fringe. It takes place at The Medina from
4-9 August (6-7pm), where he’ll be performing
songs such as The Lesson Of The Smiths, Do The Indie
Kid, Hey Hey 16K and his legendary cover of Boom Shake
The Room!
MJ Hibbett & The Validators
are releasing a new single It Only Works Because You're
Here on 21 July. It’s one of the main songs in
the show, a love story set within the information technology
community, and will be accompanied by a brand new video
in the style of a photo comic strip. Their last video,
Do The Indie Kid, made the front page of YouTube and
has had nearly 40,000 hits.
The single is being released
in time for their special performance at this year’s
Indietracks festival. The festival takes place on 26-27
July with The Wedding Present and Los Campesinos heading
the bill, but the first 100 people who bought tickets
will be entitled to attend a unique full-band version
of My Exciting Life In ROCK on the evening of Friday
25.
Once the Edinburgh run
of My Exciting Life In ROCK is over, the Validators
are returning to the studio to finish off their next
album, tentatively titled Regardez Ecoutez et Repetez,
due for release in early 2009.

TRANSGRESSIVE HOT SUMMER
TOUR |
| |
Jeremy Warmsley + Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man
+ Liam Finn + Esser + So So Modern |
| |
Whole Venue |
| |
£8.50 |
| |
Transgressive is delighted to
announce this year’s inaugural Transgressive Hot
Summer Tour to take place nationally throughout the
UK in July.
The summer is traditionally an
unlikely time to tour – it’s all festivals
and holidays and days being lost. So the format is simple:
take a vital mini-festival of sorts on the road, town
to town, of the most exciting new acts the world has
to offer right now and allow an evening of discovery
to unfurl. And it won’t cost you an arm and a
leg or a weekend in the mud. Chances are you can probably
get a bus home afterwards, too.
Naturally, all acts on the bill
are Transgressive affiliated, and thus thrillingly diverse!
Cross Kings hosts..
JEREMY
WARMSLEY: Returning to pop after a brief hiatus
making his new, second album ‘How We Became’
– due for unleashing this September on Transgressive
– Jeremy has been a busy boy. The new LP was co-produced
with none other than Markus Dravs of Arcade Fire, Bjork
and the new Coldplay album credits everywhere from Air
Studios to living rooms, and the step up really shows
– beautiful piano, guitar-drenched anthems and
ballads reside at every corner, still with Warmsley’s
ensconcing trademark electronica twists. However, whilst
alongside this, Jeremy has been developing a hit online
music programme – ‘Welcome to our TV Show’,
co-directed with girlfriend and film-maker Fay Buzzard,
which has so far featured guests ranging from Mystery
Jets, Noah & The Whale, Laura Marling, to Lightspeed
Champion, Ed Harcourt, and many more besides. So, clearly,
2008 is boding well, with upcoming, one-off double A-side
‘The Boat Song’ and ‘Temptation’
(a cover of the New Order classic) denting Radio 1 and
Radio 2 as a sly, appetising reintroduction.
OX.EAGLE.LION.MAN:
The most controversial signing on Transgressive’s
books, the diligently goth-prog quartet are the most
severe and commanding band on the scene at present.
Questioning idolatry, religion, humanity, parenthood,
and anything else too scary to ponder, theirs is a deft
and able pursuit, headed up by the iconic and fiercely
sharp frontman Frederick Blood-Royale. Debut single
‘Fatherhood’/’Motherhood’ pierced
the Radio 1-centred airwaves, but it’s all about
the next EP – ‘The Lay of the Land: The
Turn of the Tide’: a five-track odyssey and/or
opus to challenge and attack our inner core.
LIAM
FINN: One of ‘ten acts to watch in 2008’
according to ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine, and
this year’s indisputable SXSW standout in Austin,
Texas, Liam’s fast-spreading infamy speaks for
itself – a strictly DIY approach lends itself
from everything such as his insistence on doing all
the artwork, playing every instrument on his self-produced
record, and being – essentially – a live
genius, looping guitars, smacking the drums, and finding
himself ably assisted by the wonderful EJ on backing
vox and samples. As recently seen on: ‘David Letterman’
and ‘Later with Jools Holland’. Debut album
‘I’ll Be Lightning’ is out on Transgressive
Records in mid-July, with the single ‘Second Chance’
on 30th June.
ESSER:
Freshly signed for a long-term deal with Transgressive
(the label’s first signing since Foals no less),
new wave pop innovator Ben Esser was whisked away on
tour recently with classic Trans acts Foals and Mystery
Jets, and found acclaim for limited-as-hell debut 45
‘I Love You’ in April, picking up plays
all over the place from Radio 1 to BBC 6 Music, Xfm,
and all in between, as released on the acclaimed Merok
label, which previously unearthed talent such as Crystal
Castles and Klaxons. His debut release for Transgressive
will be an absolutely revolutionary concept, and a classic
dancefloor-filler; details to follow. The debut album
– currently being worked on with Black Kids and
Kanye West collaborator Lexxx – is going to be
one of next year’s most important records.
SO
SO MODERN: New Zealand art-punk-synth purveyors
SSM are certainly one of the most frenetic and enthused
live bands of our generation. They signed to Transgressive
amid a flurry of palpably awesome house party shows,
flamboyant onstage costumes and via the most entrancing
and hypnotic awkward pop arrangements of our time, winning
them shows along the way with the likes of CSS and Deerhoof.
A colour-vinyl, four single run ‘Friends &
Fires’ – one released each week in September
of 2008 – awarded them the ‘Vinyl of the
Week’ badge in ‘NME’ and prompted
endless self-promoted touring across the world. A compilation
of said-single releases for the first time ever on CD,
plus compiling a further five previously unreleased
recordings, will emerge this summer, entitled ‘Friends
& Fires’ + 000EP’s’:

Already heralded by Artrocker magazine as “ones

are an infectious blend of Blondie cool, Sex Pistols

SATURDAYS & SUNDAYS

Bristol’s finest purveyors of the simplistic four

the band has already performed alongside the likes of

brought you Small Fish Online comes the inaugural FishCaek.
For one night only the Jester Bar will be transformed
into a giant fish tank! (Seriously..) Entertainment
comes in the weird and wonderful form of Darkbusker
an erotic artist whose work once caused an episode of
Eurotrash to be banned, I am Immune;
"Cherished electro-rock pariahs" and, after
going down a storm at 93 Feet East last week, we are
pleased to welcome back London's finest pirate bar band
Owlls who promise “a set of rock-solid
whiskey-sodden numbers, taking in sea shanties, gypsy
dances, gothic terror and all points in between”
.. then New Zealand’s finest DJ Mudkip
will keep it going on ‘till late with rock n'roll,
blues, soul, funk..
Free bubbles to the first 50
through the door.. Come submerge yourselves in an evening
of fishy behaviour (we think it’s a fairly good
excuse to drink like a.. Caek.. too J ). Mermaid attire
optional.
“A venue with sole.. Cod
bless the Cross Kings!”

be featured on smallfish-online.net , send 2 mp3s and

This event is a rare chance to
see a meeting of New Zealand and UK sound artists in
one night. It will be an adventurous mix of electro-acoustic,
improvisation, found sound and noise.
Nigel Wright
has been creating audio for over 8 years and is known
for his spacious, expansive sound pieces. Dense layers
of tonal drones adumbrate the field recordings, guitar,
and tape loops that Wright uses as source material for
his laptop-based live performances. This performance
is part of his European tour. http://www.myspace.com/nigelwright
Julien Ottavi
is part of a generation of audio artists to emerge in
the 90s that indicated some of the directions that music
and sound art is taking. While at art school, he organized
a series of concerts, bringing international artists
from the experimental scene to Nantes, drawing touring
musicians to movements happening outside of Paris. This
became not just a destination but a nexus for collaborations.

London resident and New Zealand
native Peter Wright maps the same guitar/noise
outlands as his NZ predecessors The Dead C, an acknowledged
influence, first blazed through. His kit is an electric
12-string, pedals and, when recording, a laptop. He
improvises a digital drone or melody fragment, the loops,
layers and adds field recordings. Since 1998, he has
released 30 discs of solo material, much of it honing
the same massive, blissful drift of decay and evolution.
This is Peter's last U.K show before returning to New
Zealand. http://www.myspace.com/distantbombs

A systematic derangement of the
senses. Twisted tunes. Psychotropic visuals. Music to
make you bark with delight.
A sonic/visual barrage of treats.
Not as you know them.
COLT: Captivating,
disturbing ditties from the dark side of the moon. They
have effectively invented the industrial/etherial genre.
Watch out kids, next year everyone will be at it...
If car-crashes were beautiful, this would be the soundtrack.
First gig for a very long time, and maybe the last for
a while. Premiere of new material...
D-66: One man,
and his guitar. With drums and a load of machines. He
somehow manages to out-noise The John Spencer Blues
Explosion, on his own. He gets very excited, for good
reason. He has a lot to be excited about.
Distorted swampy rockabilly blues from the wrong side
of Hell. He met the Devil in a bar, bought him a few
drinks, woke up under a table with no recollection of
the night before. He tried to crawl under the floorboards,
and found a guitar...
And found himself doing this.
HOT GOTHIC: ''Electro-Oi.
Their LP will be called 'Length through Electr-Oi'.
Like GG Allin doing unspeakable things to Gary Glitter,
with Suicide blasting out in the foreground. They have
a good time. It's ugly. And strangely compelling. You
end up bopping along, and then wonder why...''
- 'ARTWHORE MAGAZINE
DEAD HORSE FOR SALE:
David Lynch has very odd sex with Diamanda Galas. This
is their spawn. They told it a bedtime story, and it
dreamt this, poor thing.
PREMIERE OF 'HANNAH HOUSE':
Surreal horror film from the US. Psychedelia
gone wrong, in a good way. Set in the American prairies
around 1900. Go figure.
Along with many special things
that it is best not to go into. For the common good. |

Dead and Buried is the UK's first,
premier and leading [contemporary] Deathrock clubnight.
The idea behind Dead and Buried is similar to that of
US and German clubs such as 'Release the Bats' [LA]and
the Drop Dead Festival [NYC], Pagan Love Songs, Under
Cover of Darkness and the Gothic Pogo Party [Germany].
These are club nights that generally attract those who
enjoy old school Goth and Punk music but play quite
different music to most “Generic Goth” clubs
today. Truly "the underground of the underground"
- the real alternative."
Dead and Buried is NOT a 'generic
Goth' clubnight
The DJ's play a mix of music ranging
from:
Deathrock, Batcave, Old School Punk, Traditional/Old
School Goth to HorrorPunk, Synthpunk, Gothabilly + Graveyard
Garage, Post Punk & Dark Indie, 80's NDW, Minimal
and New Wave.
We *DO NOT* play any EBM/Techno,
Contemporary Industrial or Metal of any description

A FREE cult film night in the
heart of London!
July is Hullabaloo Night at The
Duke as we pay tribute to all those great showmen of
cinema, those classic hucksters and tricksters who would
come up with any fun, daft and sometimes just bizarre
gimmicks to get you into the cinema. Yes we're talking
3D, smell-o-vision, space-vision and much, much more.
Our main feature is the 1991
horror thriller "Popcorn", a lovingly bloody
tribute to those day of cinematic ballyhoo, which finds
a twisted killer stalking the back corridors of a cinema
during a night of horror films. Each victim is dispatched
in a way that matches the tricks being pulled in the
cinema that night!
We've also got all our regular
fun for the evening, including an all Hullabaloo edition
of our regular Trailer Trash, fo | | | |
